We will only say yes to a directive against gender-based violence that is not empty

Rodríguez criticises that the EU does not have a directive against gender-based violence and the Council’s opposition to include rape as a crime.

Soraya Rodríguez, member of Renew Europe group, criticises the fact that the EU does not yet have a directive against gender-based violence, despite the fact that in the EU every week 50 women are killed for this type of crimes.

The MEP regrets not being able to celebrate 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a strong European directive and criticises the Council’s position, which refuses to include rape as a crime and is therefore blocking the agreement.

According to Rodríguez, the directive should oblige Member States to change their national laws and says that the European Parliament will not support a directive that does not have the violation included as a crime.
