Soraya Rodríguez, member of Renew Europe group, denounces the climate of persecution and repression against human rights defenders in Central America, which she describes as “an epidemic” and says that, between 2018 and 2022, 177 human rights defenders were killed in this region. The MEP is proud of the victory for democracy in Guatemala, but asks to continue supporting the country’s democratic institutions and points to countries such as Nicaragua and Honduras as main sources of concern. Finally, Rodriguez denounces that releasing political prisoners not only means releasing them, but also allowing them to develop their lives in full freedom.
