Soraya Rodriguez: “Let’s call things by its name: in Afghanistan there is a real gender apartheid”.
The MEP of Ciudadanos and spokeswoman in the European Parliament, Soraya Rodríguez, has welcomed the fact that the European Parliament will refer to what is happening to women in Afghanistan as gender apartheid.
“The Taliban regime has imposed a true gender apartheid, based on a systematic segregation that aims to erase girls and women from public spaces. Human rights defenders have been claiming for this recognition to happen. We are the first institution of the international community to adopt the term of “gender apartheid”. Let’s call things by their name: girls and women in Afghanistan live in real hell,” Soraya Rodríguez said to the Strasbourg plenary session.
The Liberal MEP has intervened on behalf of Renew Europe as one of the promoters of the adoption of this declaration condemning the violence that by the European Parliament.
Soraya Rodriguez has claimed that European institutions can do more to support those who defend women in Afghanistan, and she has stressed that EU must rethink its relationship with the Afghan regime to avoid any action that legitimizes it. “They are terrorist authorities who have declared war on women in a true gender apartheid,” he concluded.
