The importance of the Victims’ Rights Act, with Soraya Rodríguez and Javier Zarzalejos (France 24)

Soraya Rodríguez Ramos, MEP from Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament, was interviewed in France 24 on the revision of the EU Victims’ Rights Act. The existing Directive, in force for more than 10 years, is being revised to ensure equal protection for all victims in the EU, filling gaps in current legislation.

Rodriguez, who is rapporteur in the report on the new directive by the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament (FEMM), has also highlighted the difference in the protection and assistance of victims of cyberviolence, stressing the need to approve legal aid since the start of the complaint at the police station.

The Spanish MEP has emphasised inequality in compensation to victims, proposing a system where the State advances compensation, preventing victims from having to resort to the aggressor to claim it. In this regard, she has stressed the importance of addressing revictimisation, especially in crimes of a sexual nature, and has expressed the need for the state to act as guarantor of comprehensive reparation, including financial compensation. In this regard, the proposed review seeks to put the State in a stronger position to identify property and prosecute the culprits, offering a comprehensive response to the needs of victims in the European Union, guaranteeing their compensation and easing the burden on victims.

In short, Soraya Rodríguez Ramos has highlighted the need for a revised Victims’ Rights Directive to address new challenges, ensure equal protection and provide comprehensive support to victims across the European Union, improving both the physical and legal protection of victims, within and outside the criminal justice process.
