Eliminate subsidies to fossil energies: 52,000 million in 2020 that could have accelerated renewables
Soraya Rodríguez, MEP for Ciudadanos and spokesperson for environment, has called for the elimination of subsidies for fossil fuels to advance the climate transition “52,000 million in 2020 that could have been used to accelerate renewable energies and their storage”, she said.
“The sun, wind and water are the main assets against energy dependence, more predictable than a tyrant like Putin”, the MEP claimed before the plenary, during the debate on the EU’s 8th Environmental Framework Programme for 2030. Soraya Rodríguez regretted that the EU had not implemented the Green Deal earlier, accelerating the transition towards the elimination of the most polluting energies.
“52 billion euros spent in 2020 on financing fossil fuels that today we have to get rid of immediately because Russian gas has become the means of financing the criminal war against Ukraine. 52 billion in 2020 that we committed to eliminate in the 7th Framework Programme. What we would have done if we had invested them in accelerating renewable energies, in increasing interconnections between France and Spain, in the storage of renewable energies”, she defended.
