MEP calls for the elimination of all barriers for women to enter science careers on an equal footing
Soraya Rodríguez, MEP for Ciudadanos and spokesperson for Equality and Women’s Rights in the European Parliament, has called for the elimination of all barriers that prevent the full incorporation of women into science careers: “Women only represent 35% of scientists in Europe and it is necessary that they have the same weight as men to ensure the design of a future in equality”.
In a plenary debate on the challenges of the 67th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the liberal MEP also asked “to be aware that access to technology in developing countries barely reaches 30% of women users and in the least developed countries, only 20% have access to the internet”.
She also warned that “the new digital media are the new scenario in which violence against women takes place”. Specifically, one in ten Europeans has suffered a case of this type of violence since the age of 15 and 20% have been victims of cyber-bullying.
