The MEP has made an urgent call for the ratification of the Istanbul Convention and the adoption of a directive against gender-based violence.
In her recent intervention in the European Parliament’s plenary session, Soraya Rodríguez, representative of Ciudadanos (Cs), has urged to take measures to fight gender-based violence at EU level. Rodríguez highlighted that an estimated 50 women are murdered every week in the European Union, with a frequency of one every six hours. To date, 34 women have been killed in Spain this year as a result of gender-based violence.
The Cs representative emphasized that these femicides represent the most extreme expression of violence against women and are just the tip of the iceberg that hides other forms of abuse such as mistreatment, sexual assault, harassment, cyber violence, trafficking and the violation of sexual and reproductive rights. Additionally, she pointed to the growing trend of anti-gender movements denying the existence of gender-based violence and downplaying sexual violence.
Rodríguez stressed the need to take forceful measures and achieve historic achievements in the fight against gender-based violence. In this regard, she urged the Council to ratify the Istanbul Convention, stressing that the Court of Justice of the European Union has made it clear that there are no legal excuses for not doing so, only political ones. Likewise, she highlighted the importance of approving a directive on violence against women that equally protects all women in the European Union and guarantees that the perpetrators do not go unpunished.
Soraya Rodríguez has made an urgent call to action to tackle gender-based violence in Europe. She highlighted the need to ratify the Istanbul Convention and approve a directive that protects all women. It is essential to combat gender-based violence and ensure justice for the victims.
