Soraya Rodríguez in Plenary on corruption in Guatemala

“The European Parliament cannot remain silent: the Guatemalan authorities must reverse this drift against the rule of law.”

Soraya Rodríguez, MEP for Ciudadanos, has noted during a EP’s plenary debate that the persecution of human rights defenders, journalists, and the threats, arrests, and harassment of judicial officers are a reality in Guatemala. Since 2019, institutions capable of fighting corruption in the country have also been dismantled. She pointed out that “there is a clear and very worrying trend towards corruption and the erosion of the State and judicial independence”.

Soraya Rodríguez affirmed in the plenary session that “The European Parliament cannot remain silent: the Guatemalan authorities must reverse this drift against the rule of law, not only with promises, but with actions and results”
