MEP highlights achievements made at COP 15 and the need for effective governance for environmental protection
Spanish MEP Soraya Rodríguez Ramos, from Renew Europe parliamentary group, highlighted the role of the European Parliament at the Summit on Biodiversity and Climate Change. In his speech, Rodriguez expressed his gratitude to the Commissioner of the Commission and stressed the importance of Parliament’s active participation in these events.
“I would like to congratulate and thank the work of the commissioner at this Summit and also reiterate the importance of the European Parliament participating in these events,” she said. The MEP has supported the historic elevation of biodiversity protection to the same level as the fight against climate change, achieved at COP 15. She highlighted the ambitious agreements reached, including the protection of 30 % of terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, as well as the commitment to reduce subsidies harmful to nature and increase funding for its protection.
In addition, Rodriguez has emphasized the need for effective governance for environmental protection at global, European and national levels. She underlined the importance of binding agreements and monitoring in the area of biodiversity. The MEP concluded her speech by saying: ‘It is critical to work to ensure that the mobilization of double funding, EUR 200 billion per year, corresponds to an effective increase in actions to protect biodiversity’.
