The MEP calls for sanctions against the Sudanese regime and for it to be held accountable for human rights violations.
Soraya Rodríguez, MEP for Ciudadanos and spokesperson for Human Rights and Foreign Policy, has denounced the rape of women and girls in Sudan as another weapon of war and has demanded sanctions against the regime. She has asked the government to be held accountable for the violation of human rights.
In a debate on the situation in the country, she underlined that the Governmental Unit for Combating Violence reported nine gang rapes of women last month. One of the victims was a 10-year-old girl, “raped by ten men dressed as soldiers next to the presidential palace”. “Any step in favour of strengthening the military sector of the country is a step in favour of increasing violence,” she warned.
She defended the role of Sudanese women both in the 2019 revolution against the dictatorship and in the defence now of democracy after last October’s coup d’état.
“We must strengthen all dialogue for a democratic transition led by civil society, work together with the UN, impose sanctions, and demand accountability in human rights. In this accountability we cannot forget those who suffer the violation of their rights, they are lacerated, the women of Sudan. Too many years of using violence as a weapon of war, too much impunity in this country”, she concluded.
