MEP calls on High Representative for Foreign Policy to convene Afghan women’s conference.
Soraya Rodríguez, MEP for Ciudadanos, has asked Josep Borrell for the EU to convene the first International Conference of Afghan women in exile, so that they can establish networks “with the millions of women who are inside the hell that Afghanistan is today”.
Soraya Rodríguez, who has formally proposed to the Commission that such a conference be held, insisted on her proposal in a plenary debate on Afghanistan with the High Representative for Foreign Affairs. The situation in the country is dramatic, but particularly for women, who are subjugated by the Taliban regime.
“It is the same Taliban regime as 20 years ago and women’s rights are being violated. The closure of schools for girls is just one of the expressions of the violation of women’s human rights in the country. We must be cautious, we cannot make a mistake in the dialogue with this regime that will serve to legitimise it. Any justification of this regime is to normalise violence against women”, denounced the Liberal MEP.
