Parliamentary Alliances in the fight against hunger

Soraya Rodríguez Ramos, as a Member of Ciudadanos in the liberal group of the European Parliament, is firmly convinced that parliamentary alliances are essential tools to consolidate the European Union’s policies in order to solve, through international cooperation, some of the great challenges of our time: hunger, malnutrition, sustainability of food systems and inequality.

As a result of this work and with the aim of raising awareness of the role of Parliamentary Alliances against Hunger and Malnutrition and informing citizens about the right to food at the international level, the book “Women at the forefront of the fight against hunger” was born.

Hunger is not a problem of lack of resources but of lack of rights

The right to food is a fundamental right enshrined in the Charter of Human Rights. Food is necessary to have a dignified life. International legislation and ethics oblige all public authorities to address this problem. However, it is not possible to do so solely from technical perspectives of food production, transformation and distribution or exclusively from the angle of available resources. Hunger and malnutrition are political problems that require placing them at the centre of public policies from a multidimensional and inter-parliamentary approach.

Parliamentary Alliances are key to this task

Parliamentary Alliances bring together different political forces and different Parliamentary Committees. Not only are Agriculture Committees involved in Parliamentary Alliances, but also the Committees on Health, Education, Social and Constitutional policies, among others. All committees are at the same level. Throughout the pages of the book, you will have the opportunity to find the most significant and up-to-date information on the evolution of the right to food at the international level and the emergence and role of Parliamentary Alliances against Hunger and Malnutrition.

The book “Women at the Forefront of the Fight against Hunger”

This publication is part of the work of the European Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and Malnutrition, with the support of the European Parliament’s Renew Europe group. In this book, Soraya Rodriguez Ramos brings together the perspectives of 6 diverse women: congresswomen and senators from Africa and Latin America. The role of women in parliamentary alliances is, de facto, that of true protagonists.
